Australian Idol 6, Final 10: Truly, Madly, Deeply Darren

September 28th 2008 09:27
Last week, Brooke was sent packing prematurely. I was sad but ended up laughing. Remember how the producers overhyped the new voting system and how it will prevent shocking eliminations? It actually made it worse. At least in previous seasons, they occurred around top 7. Tom is the weakest of the bunch, and he's going to get saved by the tone deaf even if he brutally falls into the the bottom 3 week after week.

Anyhow, tonight we're celebrating the music of our own, and Darren Hayes is our guest judge. Pre-emptive standing ovation...

Here he is arriving on the stage...what? No standing ovation? Seriously.

Thanh Bui is first up. Darren says Thanh has an identity crisis with the comments he received last week, and he totally understands. Singing You're the Voice by John Farham. It was pretty strong until towards the end. Guy Sebastian sang this song 5 years ago, so he may pick up votes from his fans.

Dicko: It wasn't the coolest performance, but I can see you letting go. It's more natural. Good move on your part.

Marcia: You're loosening up. I dug it.

Darren: It felt believable. great job. That was cool.

Kyle: Fabolous voice, yes cheesy but that's what you are. But if you wanna stand out, get rid of that cheese.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 6

Chrislyn Hamilton will be singing Tina Arena - Chains. Darren admits he's doubtful Chrislyn would be able to pull it off because she's too young to be sensual like Tina. But Chrislyn would love to prove him wrong. It was a pretty shaky start, but that turned around quickly. Not only she slammed the notes, she was also able to be sexy up there. She's just getting better every week even though she isn't my no.1 favourite. But she may emerge as one very soon.

Marcia: Your music teacher said you're older than you are as a performer. I was worried, now I don't have to be anymore.

Darren: You made me look like an idiot. You tore it up. At the rehearsal, you sang it well but wasn't sexy, but THAT was sexy.

Kyle: It seems you got different people inside you. You';re just more amazing week after week. It's like I'm expecting you to crash and burn.

Dicko: I think when you put out record, your market target would be female and gay men. The next frontier for you is to be sexy.
Kyle: Do you mean the Britney way?
Marcia: Sexy and Hos are different.
Audience laughs.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 10 --- Song Choice: 10

Tom Williams is next. Darren can see he's losing his confidence after last week. He tells him to perform as if it's his last song. Singing Lights Surrounding You by Evermore. The start was pretty okay, but yeah then he sucked again and lost his pitch.

Darren: You have girls screaming for you. It was nice to see you with a bit humility.

Kyle: You were undercooked last week. The older ones that I know don;t like you. I think you get distracted by the tweens banners and stuff.

Dicko: You're appealing to tweenies. I still want you to sing something more uptempo. It's like watching Bambi up there week after week.

Marcia: This is very hard. You actually finished the song before it's supposed to finish. Do not believe the hype that you get.

Vocal: 5 --- Performance: 5 --- Song Choice: 7

It's time for Teale Jakubenko. Darren says he's shocked with Teale's song choice. I agree, at the rehearsal it sounds too musical and like a defacating old man. Darren tries to fix it. Singing Eskimo Joe - Red Wine. Ah, that sounds better than the rehearsal. Performance wise it's almost perfect. I wish he didn't pepper-shake the mic, I never liked that from a performer.

Kyle: I think you're 80% on the way of being a great performer. I knew you were trying to be scary but ended up kinda scary. But still it was good.

DIcko: Vocally very good, but I disagree with Kyle because it looks too "try hard"

Marcia: Cause you're a man, Dicko. I thought that was sexy.

Darren: I thought it's world class. Believable. Yeah it may look a bit uncoordinated but so I was in the past.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 10

Roshani Priddis is up next. Singing Heading In the RIght Direction by Anne Geyer?. Darren told her she must be sad in the past. ROshani said she was a nerd as a kid and very lonely. She sounds amazing at the rehearsal, hope that translates to the actual performance. Starting with just the piano. Once again, very classy performance, it's definitely her fixed identity. There are so many amazing vocal moments there, and only little vocal flaws.

Dicko: You look sensational. You stand out as a performer because you show a different energy try to narrow everybody's sight on you.

Marcia: I love you, but I think it's wrong to think when you're singing. I wish you sing it totally with heart. Fly darling, let go. You have an amazing voice.

Darren: That was an outstanding vocal performance, Love your outfit. I know you picked the outfit.

Kyle: Great performance, great vocal, great legs, but I think you may be too consistent, hence boring. I still want the edge.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 10 --- Song Choice: 8

Wes Carr will be singing Friday On My Mind. Darren actually invited the person who wrote that song. Wes feels intimidated but hopes he can do the song proud. I think he should cut his hair, he looks like a wiggling long-haired dog up there. I have to disagree with the judges here, I thought that was boring in terms of how that just sounds exactly the same like last week. Chrislyn has successfully shown different things since last week, Wes should follow suit.

Marcia: Yeah, I love your energy. You're solid as a performer. Just one thing, I'm beggin you to take that hat off, I know it's your signature.

Darren: Hands down you're a superstar on stage. You remind me of Bono in terms of confidence and how you're a decent human being the camera.

Kyle: I like the Tom Sawyer hair flipping there. I think you're brilliant, even though the Forrest Gump dancing.

Dicko: I think you're a walking Ipod, you have broad taste in music. That's a rock star.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 6

Luke Dickens will be singing Cold Chisel - Flaming Trees. Darren worries about the way Luke sings, he may lose his voice if singing like that all the time. Oh man, I've had enough of him. I guess many of you like him, it's too Aussie for my taste. Too much growls.

Darren: I have such a soft spot for you. You're a great person with extraordinary voice. Congrats. One of my fave Aussie songs ever.

Kyle: My family all love you. You're definitely the true represenation of true Aussie rock artist.

Dicko: Did you lose your voice because you drank/partied? Be honest
Luke: yep kinda
Dicko: Well that's good, it's the blokey bloke image. But this is a competition, you need to take it seriously and have a rest.

Marcia: A little bit of knowledge. A lot of musicians didn't really rest because they relied most on their instruments. YOU are the instrument, you have to rest

Vocal: 3 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 6

Sophie Patterson is singing Potbelleez - Don't Hold Back. Darren thinks she's not the girl that he saw in London. Once again, Sophie's vocal is shaky. She doesnt seem to recover from that until the song finished. But the judges actually think she's back. Huh? I thought that was worse. I guess it sounds very different from TV than when you're actually there.

Kyle: Congrats, I think you're back as a person. That was rock solid

Dicko: I prefer if you sing that uptempo actually. You need to show more personality.

Marcia: Your personality is shown tonight, the audience is drawn to you. Well done

Darren: I disagree with Dicko, you reinvented the song by singing that slow. If you get voted off tomorrow, at least it's your trueself.

Vocal: 4 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 8

Mark Spano is next. Darren thinks Mark sings the soft parts really well, but the high parts not so much. But Mark manages to overcome that in a short time at the rehearsal. Singing John Farnham - Age Of Reason. Like Wes, always performed well but it sounds the same every week.

Dicko: I think you sang and performed well. But I think you're just cruising. You're lacking moments.

Marcia: Are you scared to just let go? It was beautifully done, but I know you got a lot more to give.

Darren: That was great. Solid. I believe you. Are you holding back because of the voice issue in the past? Anywho, I think you look comfortable.

Kyle: I agree with Dicko. You're in a cruise control. You need a moment, you need to smash and show like a great effort. But that was still good.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 10

The pimp spot goes to Madam Parker. Darren thinks she should have more attitude, don't blend with the wallpaper. Be like a tiger. Singing Veronicas - Hook Me Up. Wow, a brave song choice. She definitely plays the game, singing something extremely contemporary. I always liked her but my friend never did, she thinks Madam always looks like she's on drugs. This time, I have to agree with my friend. The vocal was kinda bad as well.

Marcia: That was unusual. How do you feel?
Madam: It felt dangerous
Marcia: I dunno if you did it justice, but you're sexy up there, well done

Darren: That was cute and raunchy and sexy. I know it's hard to find that 'inner Ho'. I know you're not a ho. Beautiful tone to your voice

Kyle: It was a dangerous song choice for a soul singer like you. I think you're better singing soul song, you're not that good singing pop rock songs like that.

Dicko: People think pop is easy, but you have to have a lot of confidence and edge when singing it. That was like Mother Teresa holding a lingerie party.

Vocal: 6 --- Performance: 6 --- Song Choice: 8

My ranking:
1. Chrislyn
2. Roshani

3. Mark
4. Teale

5. Madam
6. Thanh
7. Wes

8. Tom
9. Sophie
10. Luke

Last week is stronger overall, but tonight is still worthy to watch. Tom's fans get more annoying each week.
