Australian Idol 6, Final 11: Cindy Lauper Ownage!

September 21st 2008 08:47
Last week, we said our Sayonara to Jonny. I was okay with him until he said how he doesn’t sing covers and the remaining 11 are more comfortable doing it. In other words, he single-handedly robbed a wildcard contestant who actually wouldn’t mind doing covers. Good riddance.

This week the top 11 have been mentored personally by Cindy Lauper, and the rumour is she’ll also be behind the judging panel tonight. Canadian Idol, last year, also had her as a mentor but not as a guest judge. I’m actually more thrilled to see her than the contestants. By the way, tonight is the 80s night.

First to sing is Luke Dickens. Cindy says he has a natural charm and has to be himself. That's a great gift. Singing Jack & Diane. I still can't get him, watching him feels like watching a show meant for fathers. There's nothing youthful about the performance and it's stiff to the point like where his face looks like he forgot his lyrics, but he didn't.

Dicko: Tonight something clicked with you, you dont look shy anymore. Great, mate!

Marcia: You're so comfortable, sang so well. Well done.

Cindy: Told ya, you're natural. It's rock on roll with that devil t shirt.

Kyle: I think you look like you borrowed Dicko's shirt, that's why he likes it. Great start, good luck.

Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 4 --- Song Choice: 4

Brooke Addamo is the second performer of the night. Brooke is a little bit sick apparently. Cindy tells her to tell the fackin' story to the audience and tell Brooke to push Cindy's shoulder. Singing Betty Davis' Eyes....eh I can't catch the artist's name. I'm a pretty 80s music virgin. God, that's a sensual start, I like it. Frankly, sensual middle, and sensual end. Love it.

Marcia: The most solid/aggressive of you. You pushed yourself. Well done!

Cindy: It was great, you made it your own, you did it the way you felt.

Kyle: We always thought you were good, that;s the first time I go wow. Sultry, well executed, nice outfit. Perfect.

Dicko: You look hot and contemporary. I thought you'll be too timid for that song, but I was wrong. Well done.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 10 --- Song Choice: 10

It's Madam Parker's turn. Cindy says to her that it's good to pull her tongue when she gets cold and tells her to rest much. Singing Diana Ross's Upside Down. She looks fabulous, her best look. She obviously sings it subtly because of her recent health problem. But I still find it very enjoyable. I actually think her vocal is the most perfect this time around.

Cindy: I would suggest one thing because you chose an RNB song. I just wish you strengthen the vocal more.

Kyle: I tihnk you look fantastic from someone from a ghetto. You pulled it well for someone who just lost her voice.

Dicko: By your standards, that was a little bit weak, but you're still a great singer.

Marcia: You just look comfortable, slid thought the stage, and made everyone felt comfortable even when they knew you had cold. Well done.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 10 --- Song Choice: 9

It's Mark Spano's time. He'll be singing I Want To Know What Love Is. Cindy apparently has a smiliar story how she lost her voice when she was in a band, and her band told her to never sing again. Cindy tells him to play his tongue as an exercise and blow balloons. Vocally, it gives me chills, but I wish he opens his eyes more. He almost doesn't connect with the audience throughout the performance.

Kyle: Nice job. That was 100% believable.

Dicko: You're so relaxed backstage. Girls love your voice, gay guys love you as the volume's turned down.
Mark: As long as they vote!

Marcia: Well done, darling!

Cindy: You did great. You're Italian, you're singing with a lot of feeling.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 10

Tom Williams
is up next. He obviously has pitch problems during the rehearsal with Cindy. She gives him a little tube, asks him to sing through it. She says he's a crooner, so croon! Singing Billy Joel's Uptown Girl. Once again, he Disneyfies a song. That is a boring performance from someone as youthful as him.

Dicko: It's clear you're adorable and able to evoke empathy. But you need to step it up, there's no fun in that fun song. Looks like a 9 year old coached by his mom.

Marcia: I disagree, that's the most mature performance from you. You need to find a little UGH from you. You think too much about your notes.

Cindy: You sang it really well. I kinda agree you need to own the stage more. I'm proud of you, just keep going.

Kyle: one word, you know it, it's in your head, my head, and everyone's....DISASTER. You look uncomfortable, yeah you did everything, gave your best, but no.

Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 5 --- Song Choice: 8

Chrislyn Hamilton is next. She picks True Colours by Cindy because she's really passionate about inner beauty. She's crying and Cindy gives her tissue. Finally not a predictable song choice by her standards. Chrislyn goes acoustic this time. Once again, she gets a genuine standing ovation from the audience.

Marcia: What you just did, if you show your true colours, it will be beautiful.

Cindy: *crying*, you were in it, you owned it. You arrangement was lovely and it suited you.

Kyle: You look great, your eyes look amazing. That was emotional. Another brilliant performance alghouth at first was dissapointed because you're the upbeat girl.

Dicko: We haven't seen this tender side of you, and it's sensational.

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 8

The next performer is Teale Jakubenko. Cindy says he sounds too tight, so she asks him to jump and stretch. Singing U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. It's a strong vocal, definitely better than last week.

Cindy: It was so great, you were in it and sang every note. You sound like that country guy you like.

Kyle: I'm very impressed. That was a superstar performance. Great voice for that great song. Where have you been hiding?

Dicko: That is the biggest improvement on this show. For the first time, I could see what kind of artist you are. Sexy, confident.

Marcia: That was over too soon. Well done!

Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 9 --- Song Choice: 10

Sophie Patterson is next. She'll be singing Annie Lennox's Sweet Dreams . Cindy says her pelvis is too tight and stiff when she sings, so asks her to bite while moving around her bottoms. Better than last week obviously. Her resemblance with Carrie Underwood kinda scares me a bit. But her choreograph is a bit boring.

Kyle: I thought you wouldn't have that umph to sing that song, but you proved me wrong. I think you put your own spin.

Dicko: I was worried too, I thought you were going to be pitchy, It's cool shoes you're wearing, but those stripper shoes made you feel uncomfortable to move around the stage.

Marcia: Glad that you came out and utilised the choreograph of the backup singers.

Cindy: I thought you did great but I have to agree with those shoes. I cant sing in those shoes either. You have to buy shoes like the ones Spanish dancers wear.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 10

Wes Carr is next. Cindy asks him to blow balloons 5 times before he goes up to stage, to help stimulate his voice into the performance. Singing Bruce Springsteen's Dancers In The Dark. While I don't think it sucks, the music sounds more awesome and he's kind of under it, especially most of the performers before him truly showed their strenghts vocally.

Dicko: Yet, another brilliant performance from you. You look very comfortable.

Marcia: Don't ever change a thing. The whole room got electric when you walked up there.

Cindy: You did great. Next thing you need to do is write songs.

Kyle: If I had to invest money today, I'll put it on you. I think you're ready.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 8

Roshani Priddis is up next. She is going to sing What's Love Got To Do It by Tina Turner. Cindy asks her to get tough for this song. Cindy says she got chills a few times. That's fierce yet still sophisticated.

Marcia: That was FANTASTIC! Really, you act it well. Well done!

Cindy: I was more nervous than you. You hit your points well. When you sing that song, you built it very well step by step. You owned the stage, awesome on the high notes. Though you better watch the pitch in the beginning with the piano.

Kyle: That was great, but I wish you smashed it more, Still it's poised and beautiful.

Dicko: Sometimes you get a little too shy and a very minor pitch problem. Still, I think the stars are rising from you.

Vocal: 10 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 10

The pimp spot belongs to Thanh Bui. He'll be singing The Police - Every Breath You Take. Cindy thinks he's too stiff and asks him to punch the sofa. I think the tempo is too fast. It was pretty good, not great

Cindy: I thought that was great, you were jumping/running in your head. You really went into that place.

Kyle: The beginning I thought started too quick, pacy. I thought you were going to be fake, but the real you took over by the middle of the song.

Dicko: I love your voice, I think it's too fast and cheesy, still need to slap the boyband out of you. Not funky enough to sing pop, not sexy enough to sing Rnb.

Marcia: We all work in progress. You got to drop that and be stronger.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 10

My ranking:
1. Roshani
2. Brooke

3. Mark
4. Chrislyn

5. Teale
6. Madam
7. Wes
8.Thanh
9. Sophie

10. Tom
11. Luke

It's definitely a really strong night. No one did major mistakes, not even minor with an exception of Tom, but again only minor. Either Tom or Luke should go, but Tom obviously got a strong fan base, so Luke better go.
