Australian Idol 6, Semi-Final 1: First 'Live Thoughts' of the Season!

September 1st 2008 09:25
I'm about to review/criticise the first 6 live performances of this year's Aussie talents! Which 2 do I like to advance to the next round? Chrislyn and the jazzy Nicole Banks. But I think Wes Carr has this in the bag, especially with a lot of airtime during the audition episodes showering all over him.

Dicko said the winner will not only get a recording contract and a car, but also some kind of fund worth $200,000 for the winner to explore/maximise their individuality and songwriting.

First up, Chrislyn Hamilton from Queesnland. She said she's nervous and then we get to a short recap of her idol journey so far. She said she'll never give up music. She's singing Proud Mary. Oh gosh, I like her, but I wish she picks something that's not overdone. Definitely a safe choice to get a lot of votes. She's energetic and the audience was pretty into it. I too thought she has this in the bag, but that was a meh performance. I'm disappointed. Her audition in Brisbane:

Kyle: Big gigantic star. It's very obvious you have an amazing voice but you need to show you're on fire right from the start, but good luck.

Marcia: Congrats on being the first one cause it's always hard. You sang really well. What you need to have is vocal consistency from start to finish

Dicko: You said you're new to this. You picked a great. Big girl, Big Voice, Big Chance, Well Done!

Vocal: 10 --- Performance: 9 --- Song Choice: 3

Next up, MItchell Steele, singing Life is A Highway by the Rascals. Wow, I didn't expect this. I thought all the time he's more of a ballad person. Klancie from season 4 is in the audience too. Nice job I must say, although a bit whiny on some parts.

Kyle: I like you a lot, the hat, the eyebrow. You look comfortable, having a good time. When you're relaxed, your magic comes. Good luck

Marcia: Strangely enough, you're the most seasoned. Without the guitar, show that smile cause you have a beautiful smile.

DIcko: We never had someone like you on the show. The song is a bit too masculine for you, like a juvenile trying to sing a man's song. But you did good.

Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 8

It's Jaden Dowd from London. She said it's weird to come back and reunite with family after not seeing them for years. She is singing Finally, I forgot who the artist is. She's wearing a black dress, usually not a good move to be memorable on screen. The performance was....ordinary.

Kyle: That's a hideous jumpsuit you're wearing.
Jaden: but Delta Goodrem also wears this!
Kyle: Okay. You're a fine singer, but I thought that was boring. You're stuck in the 80s, hair looks nice, you're quite pretty tonight. But I still think it's a dodgy song choice

Marcia: You have try to make a quite impression. How do you feel right now
Jaden: I did a song I feel comfortable with
Marcia: We believe in you, but you have start believing in you. Well done.

Dicko: I feel responsible for you, I think you're fabulous. You're unique, but you have to tone it down a bit. You look like you were pissed up there, you need to be more classy.

Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 2

Olly Corpe is up next. The born and raised in France curly haired guy. He likes to sing French music because it always sounds beautiful. Singing James Morrison's Wonderful World. A smart song choice for the young ones to vote. I feel there were a lot of flat notes.

Kyle: Very nice, I enjoy watching. I think you're the real deal. It did zero for me but i still love to see you.

Marcia: You did a very good job, well done

Dicko: I wouldn't go pop too soon if I were you. I think you can afford to be a little bit more intense.

Vocal: 6 --- Performance: 6 --- Song Choice: 9

It's Nicole Banks. Her original audition:

She is singing Sam Sparrow's Black and Gold. Again, smart song choice. Well cause I love that song anyway and always listens to it at work. She jazzes up the song obviously. Ouch, that was quite a painful belting note there. A pretty solid effort

Kyle: I like the song, but I didnt like that fact that you look stressing. I hope next time it's a zero stress.

Marcia: You got a dynamite voice. Dont oversing, just stand and deliver. This applies to others too.

Dicko: Your challenge is staying true to your passion. That was a clever choice, but i think your voice was a little bit too pleased, next time be more natural when you deliver your voice.

Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 9

So the pimp spot goes to Wes Carr. It's already in his bag accordingly. Am I the only one who thinks his Mr Brightside performance in the top 100 was weak? Oh, now he's singing Foo Fighters' Times Like These. I'm surprised that he's not stiff cause most musos/songwriters can't really be exciting on stage.

Kyle: I wont forget about you. I like it.

Marcia: You did well although you low notes was a bit not good.

Dicko: I agree with Marcia. I hope you're not plateauing, I hope you improve week after week because all the eyes are on you at the moment, but well done.

Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 9 --- Song Choice: 9

My ranking:
1. Chrislyn
2. Wes
3. Nicole

4. Mitchell

5. Ollie
6. Jaden

I still think it's going to be Chrislyn and Wes who are getting the top 2 votes. Six more contestants will sing tomorrow. Tom Williams gets a loud cheer from the teenyboppers when his name was mentioned. Oh god, hope that doesn't reflect on the votes.
