Australian Idol 6, Semi-Final 2: Go, Amanda!
September 2nd 2008 09:04
Yes, I REALLY want the choppy-blonde-haired girl, Amanda, to be in the top 12, but realistically she won’t. There are two stronger singers/belters standing in her way. One being the Best & Less retail sales assistant who fancies Jennifer Hudson from Dreamgirls, Natalie, and the other being Thanh, the former member of an unsuccessful boyband North and currently a singing teacher. Not that I despise these two contenders, in fact I would love all three to advance simultaneously. I just reckon it would be harder for Amanda to win the wildcard round if she doesn’t make it on this one, due to little airtime she’s been getting.
The voting has been closed.
Nonetheless, here we go, the first singer in the top 12 is……………………………CHRISLYN!!!! YES!! She can't even talk, she's obviously so happy!
And the second spot goes to……………………………..WES!!!
I’m delighted, so now let’s get to our first performer of the night, Luke Dickens, a shearer from NSW. He is about to sing the classic Mustang Sally. I respect that he decided to sing something he obviously is really into, but you have a good ride, buddy. I don't think school kids will be interested to text your name. That was smooth, flawless, but definitely not a showstopper. But the judges are liking it, I totally disagree.
Dicko: I like you man, that was great
Marcia: Look at you! That was dynamite! Well done!
Kyle: No doubt the voice is great, you make it seem easy, but what about the transition of from being a shearer to this? What do you think?
Luke: Well, me and my wife are expecting a baby.
Kyle: Congrats man.
Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 5 --- Song Choice: 4
Brooke Wilkie is next. She’s from Rockingham, WA, singing a song called "New Shoes", I have no idea who the artist is. Oh no, she chokes literally. She's losing her voice. Poor her. I hope she gets a wildcard cause her voice is too unique to be missed. Damn, she's looking sad, not even pretending to be strong.
Marcia: Brave effort, I felt for you. Self explanatory, you lost your voice. Try not to be nervous, you know, try to smile and choreograph. I"m so sorry.
Kyle: Tell us what happened?
Brooke: I just got sick really quickly.
Kyle: I'm not even gonna judge that. It's unfair for you. I still think you deserve a place here.
Dicko: Well, I'm gonna judge you. I think that you just need to communicate with the audience more, but it's just bad luck for you tonight.
Vocal: 4 --- Performance: 4 --- Song Choice: 9
Just to show how she actually is as a performer:
It's Tom Williams' time. God, the excruciating teenage cheers occur already. Apparently, he's the youngest contestant this year. He had a health problem as a kid, ear infection, throat infection, and wants to be an inspiration because of that. He is singing You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban. Yikes, I hate this cheesy song. I know it's inspirational and stuff, but no thanks. Is it just me or did he dye his hair? I can tell you that on youtube, he already got picked and being called gay and other names, and that song will even worsen that.
Kyle: I like you, but too girlie for my liking, although you have a good voice. No one gives a damn about the infection. Sounds like your grandma picked that song.
Dicko: Your cuteness will carry you, but you have to improve your voice to get to the opera house.
Marcia: Listen, you just need to breathe properly, and that lets you down a bit. Everybody loves that song, I'm torn.
Kyle: As I said
Marcia: I'm not a grandma!
Vocal: 6 --- Performance: 6 --- Song Choice: 4
Natalie Colavito is here. I love her. She was rejected last year near the very end. OK, she's singing Listen from Dreamgirls. This is self-explanatory, no need to say much. Gosh, those belting voices. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I'm so touched.
Dicko: You are a plus-sized performer. Your next step is to use what you've got like Chrislyn did last night. Well done!
Marcia: You sing a very appropriate song. Listen! I disagree with Dicko, you have to stand still to sing that kind of song. But you need to listen (I really I dont get what Marcia meant by this).
Kyle: You said you were bullied as a kid and such, and you said this is your happiest. I'm please to see you up there. You are working what you've got. I dont think you have to shake your butts for the old fella at the other end of the panel here.
Vocal: 10 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 9
It's my sentimental favourite, Amanda Grafanakis. Love her since audition.
Eh, why is she dressed up? I thought she's the rocker chick. She sings Pink's Who Knew. Oh wait, I didn't see the stockings first time around. Wow, initially I thought it's a lackluster choice until she puts her own spin in the middle by making all the instruments paused and just her voice sailing through. Excellent.
Marcia: It's important to take steps, but on that song I think you have to start hard right away. The notes were great, but just cut to the chase. Well done.
Kyle: You start a little bit too sweet cause that's not really what the song is about. Reasonable job, you look fantastic. The right song choice, but only that minor mistake.
Dicko: You've got to be careful. We said to you that you don't have the best voice. You're here because you're a great performer, don't feel intimidated by others.
Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 7
Thanh Bui is getting the lucky pimp spot. But first, James is apologising for saying Amanda's number wrong first time around. Amanda says all good. Back to Thanh, he wants to make his parents proud. He sings One by U2. Cool choice. He starts acapella, just with the piano. Overall, a strong performance but I wish on the "sisters and my brothers" part he pulls a Mary J Blige. Still, I like it.
Marcia: We know that you're a teacher, if a student sings just like you did, what would you say?
Thanh: Well, you did the best you could. Watch back the tape!
Marcia: I'll say that to you too, well done!
Kyle: Amazing voice, I don't think you even have to try hard. You definitely stand out. My only problem is tonight you were very nervous and went to the bathroom a lot and you made a splash there and the water sprayed all over your jacket (He's referring to the black-dotted suit jacket Thanh's wearing which he thinks hideous)
Dicko: The operation begins. As good as it was, still too boyband-ish for me. You need to stand out with an edge. You're still too sugary.
Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 10
My ranking:
1. Natalie
2. Thanh
3. Amanda
4. Luke
5. Tom
6. Brooke
Natalie and Thanh are definitely getting through. I hope Amanda is the lucky one though. Tom better not screw this up. Another 6 will sing tomorrow. See you all tomorrow!
