Australian Idol 6, Semi-Final 3: “Sri-Lankan? No, I’m Aussie!”
September 3rd 2008 09:00
I don’t actually have any solid favourite out of this group, but the majority of my friends here and overseas have asked me to power vote for Roshani. They think she’s sophisticated yet humble, singular, and of course sings very well. Let’s just hope those attributes come out of her performance tonight.
The voting line is now closed. The next singer to get a place in the top 12 after last night’s performance is…………………………Tom
What a terrible choice, damn you teenyboppers/grandmas!
The second lucky person is……………………Thanh!!!!
First up is Matthew Parsons. He works as a baker. He is singing Summertime, and I didn't catch the name of the artist. He seems enjoying it up there, very laid-back. But that's about it. Again, it's not a showstopper
Dicko: I think you need to have more edge, more rock n roll.
Marcia: You're a fine singer, it was slightly pitchy. I think that's because you're used to having a guitar in your hand.
Kyle: You're great but you look too neat, and just be you, try to ignore the shenanigans backstage.
Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 6 --- Song Choice: 5
Coming up is Sophie Paterson. She went to London 3 years ago to find music opportunities. Singing Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. Oops, I thought the beginning was too forceful and shouty. She made it sounded like some country folk song. While she sings good, the arrangement is not right. She lost her focus a bit too by the end.
Marcia: I think a lot of people out here want to satisfy you. I thought that was courageous and smoky, well done!
Kyle: That's sexy and confident. I think a lot of artists at the moment do what you just did.
Dicko: A little bit of surprise package. You're cool. I think you took risk, and personally the standout performance out of every performance so far this year.
Wow, whose bloody ears need to be checked?
Vocal: 6 --- Performance: 9 --- Song Choice: 6
Next performer is Teale Jakubenko from Queensland. It's Evermore's Running. Cool arrangement. I wasn't expecting to like him. That's a strong vocal performance I think. Definitely a huge improvement from his first audition:
Kyle: You're handsome, that was fantastic, but I think there were visible nerves.
Dicko: I think you tripped twice and I think you know it too. You're a sex symbol and I think you need to hotten it up.
Marcia: You tick all the boxes. You're very comfortable. You got to trust yourself a bit more so you can go cha cha cha on stage.
Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 9
Another Queenslander is up and it's Brooke Schubert. She's a self-proclaimed country girl. She is singing When Will I Be Loved. Her stylists should be fired, she looks like a mom up there. Hmm, this is not my thing, I prefer her singing something sweeter like she did in her audition:
Dicko: You're 22, right? I think you're in the top 3 of the best performers this year. I think you need to really show to the public what your music identity is, but that was terrific.
Marcia: I know you did gigs where people didn't really care. I think you need to think about your notes when you sing because the people here actually care.
Kyle: I agree with what Dicko and Marcia. You sing well, work the stage well, but there's something about you I just don't care. You did everything right, but I don't know what it is.
Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 6
Mark Spano is the next singer. He's been sick for 2 days and is still a little bit sick. He is singing Come Said The Boy by Mundo Rock. I already like the song choice. He sings flawlessly, I like his voice tone. My only criticism is cut the boyband antics a bit cause that's not what he is.
Marcia: One of the baddest songs in Australia. You look like you know what exactly you're doing. Well done.
Kyle: I think Marcia toned down her comments cause I can hear brrrrrrrrrrr from her stomach. *Marcia slaps Kyle's head with a folder* It's 10 out of 10. Perfect.
Dicko: I think tonight is the strongest group. But even that, you're still able to stand out. Awesome.
Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 8 --- Song Choice: 10
Roshani Priddis is the pimp spot dweller. She's the smallest performer out of the group. Kyle said he's disappointed that he wasn't present when she auditioned. She comes off very likeable. She's singing Knock On Wood. Oh no, why is she singing this bar song. While it's a sexy performance and the vocal was a bit off on some parts, I expect a lot more from her. I thought she underperformed...until the last part though.
Kyle: You scrap out quite nice. It was interesting but I'm dissapointed cause I wish you do the hard and edgy version of that song.
Dicko: I disagree. I love your version. You're so commercially attractive and bankable. One big problem is you're pitchy.
Marcia: Yeah are you aware of your pitch? You're absolutely beautiful and stunning and I hope you get through. Don't cruise around too much.
Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 9 --- Song Choice: 4
My ranking:
1. Mark
2. Roshani
3. Teale
4. Brooke
5. Matt
6. Sophie
This is definitely a really good group, just as long as Matt and Sophie aren't the ones in the top 12. They were good, but the other 4 were simply greater. Either way, tomorrow's result will be way more pleasing than tonight with Tom, ugh. How ironic this is. Before the show, I said I don't have any favourite but now I like 3 or 4 of them.
