Australian Idol 6, Semi-Final 4: Why Certainly, Madam!
September 4th 2008 09:05
Like yesterday, I don’t have any favourite out of this group. But I’m telling you I don’t want to see James Spargo advancing. He’s even worse than Tom voice-wise. And Irae? Who is Irae? He didn’t even get a one-second airtime from any of the audition episodes. Hence, tonight is a big one for him because Australian is about to find out whether he’s the talented, under-pimped underdog that the judges/producers put through thinking he would be an unthreatening cannon fodder (ie. Kate DeAraugo, the winner of season 3), OR he’s really that boring to deserve any airtime.
Let's head to the first result. It's.......................................Mark!!!! YES! He said he felt wowed to be the top vote-getter out of this strong group.
Second person is..............................................Teale!!
Roshani will absolutely get a wildcard.
Irae Schwenke is from Brisbane and is up first. Performing first and no air time, well he might as well just head home. Singing Beautiful Soul by Jesse McCartney. He sings okay. Nothing amazing.
Dicko: I think the chorus should have been more aggressive. You're great but that wasn't.
Marcia: You got to believe in yourself more.
Kyle: I love your voice. I want the real you, the charmer to be on the stage there, not the TV version of you.
Vocal: 7 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 5
Kayla Vanzetta is up next. She's been waiting for 5 years to audition. I'm sorry, I didn't catch the song or the artist she is singing. That's a strong start. Unfortunately, it didn't go anywhere. The vocal is flawless but she didn't put any dramatic effect, so it's a passable performance.
Marcia: You did a very good job, but be careful when you go for the big notes and learn to control your breath,
Kyle: I know you've been nervous all day. I think you're great. I love that you don't have the suburban blonder look, sort of emo. You actually nailed that department. I don't think that was your best performance.
Dicko: You sing very very well. You said you're shy. I'm afraid that was a bit forgettable. This is tough.
Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 7
James Spargo is up next and singing Chasing Cars. Um, his voice doesn't fit this song at all. He doesn't sing well either anyway, and he never did. He didn't deserve to get through top 24 to begin with.
Kyle: I think you oversang everything. You should just cruise through. You made it theatrical. You're pretty though.
Dicko: If you win this, you'll be marketed as Adult Contemporary Artist. But that was too safe, you should cut loose a little bit. Be more unpredictable.
Marcia: All you need to do is cut your notes a bit quicker. That was the best song out of 2007, tell the story quickly in pop sensibility.
Vocal: 5 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 9
Brooke Addamo is next. She is singing one of my favourite songs ever, Foolish Games by Jewel. Yep, she did it justice, almost can't fault her. Beautiful times a million.
Marcia: A singer who can sing ballads can captivate audience. And that's what you just did, well done. I can hear pin falling
Dicko: You have sung ballad songs 6 times in a row. You're heading to a brick wall. You have to be more versatile.
Kyle: I like you but just don't be the big ballad chick all the time.
Dicko: We like you a lot, please take my advice on board.
Brooke: I want to establish myself who I really am first as an artist, then if I get through, I'll show all those different sides of me.
Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 9 --- Song Choice: 10
Next performer of the night is Jonny Taylor. With an Elvis' classic, here he is with Hound Dog. He made it ballad and more emotional. An interesting take for me. Eh...I think he should have just stayed that way. Suddenly it got upbeat and it totally ruined my connection with him.
Dicko: You are unpredictable, and it's good to take risk. Why would you do that to such a great song? It was weird. To me, that was musical vandalism.
Marcia: It's not wrong to deconstruct a song constructively. I think it will be better just to sing it the same tempo from the start.
Kyle: I agree with Dicko, but I still enjoy it.
Vocal: 8 --- Performance: 6 --- Song Choice: 6
Madam Parker will sing for us last. She misses her son so much. I like her personality the best. She's humble but not over the top humble. She singing No One by Alicia Keys. Totally enjoyable.
Kyle: Wow. However, I wish you have the attitude as big as your voice. You're nice, quiet. You look a bit uncomfortable in your high heels.
Dicko: Vocally I still think you're the real deal. There's so much to this business. It's not just the vocal. You have to build up other things such as your personality and confidence. I would still pay to watch you though.
Marcia: There is something fascinating about your personality. You sang very well. I wish you all the luck.
Vocal: 9 --- Performance: 7 --- Song Choice: 9
My ranking:
1. Madam
2. Brooke
3. Jonny
4. Kayla
5. Irae
6. James
Hopefully it will be Madam and Brooke getting the most votes. There are 5 guys and only 1 girl at the moment in the top 12.
