Feeder: Silent Cry (CD Preview)

May 22nd 2008 01:24
One of my much loved non-'topdog' UK rock bands is once again ready to tackle the music scene with yet another sipid album, to be released on 16 June 2008. Like a very few people, I had the privilege to listen to the full version of each track. Accordingly, I want to share the experience with each of you.

WARNING: SPOILER MATERIAL BELOW!

TRACKLIST:

1. We Are People
This will be the band’s first single for this record (if we discounted the already-released ‘Miss You’). The music is predominantly filled with repetitive hits on the floor tom, which I think is intentional to give that sense of plurality of people. Although the melody is a bit generic, it’s a pretty solid opener (7/10).

“We Are the People is a song about change and unity in the world we live in... it's like a call to arms but in a positive and non-violent way. It's time for change and only we the people can do that... I wanted the song to be anthemic and sonically uplifting...”
Grant Nicholas, 60 Seconds, Metro.co.uk

2. Itsumo

My spontaneous thought was it’s a Japanese girl’s name, hence it’s pretty much about a bittersweet interracial love song: “Don’t say that you know me unless you stay around”. But then I decided to google images for “Itsumo”, and all I got was pictures of a female anime character. Could this song possibly be a love letter to someone living in a fantasy world? I think so. Feeder earns themselves a perfect score for being creative here (10/10).

3. Miss You
I can virtually guarantee every Feeder fan has heard of this track. Instead of shooting a video clip, the band actually came up with a video making contest. And on 10 May 2008, the band declared the maker of this video below as the winner. You’ll definitely see hard work and originality in the clip but I don’t think for a second it’s fitting to the song.

4. Tracing Lines
It starts off with a Ryan Adams country/rock feel. But other than that, I can’t find any other appealing aspect unfortunately. Nothing (maybe a few) stands out (6/10).

5. Silent Cry
This is number 1 on my list, and frankly I’m not gonna say much on this one. I genuinely want the other Feeder fans out there to be pleasantly surprised by this song just as I was when I first heard it (10/10).

6. Fires
This one feels like a theme song because it’s hardly memorable, fortunately only on the first listen. After one week of getting used to this song, I have to say with the combination of the thoughtfully beautiful lyrics and simple melody, it’s pretty fantastic. I got goose bumps even when listening to it on a running treadmill (8/10).

7. Heads Held High
It begins with just a sweet acoustic guitar, and then sadly continues as another forgettable 'loud ballad', sigh (5/10).

8. 8.18
Yes! I’m glad they finally brought back their notable altered “ooh” effects they always used into this song. This is literally an eye-opener after two consecutive tedious slow beat songs (9/10).

9. Who’s The Enemy
I love the conflicting feeling within this one. It has gloomy/suspenseful verses accompanied with subtle army marching snare drums and lively/angry choruses cocooned with guitar distortions (10/10).

10. Space
This is merely a 34 second track. There are space/galaxy sounds in the background while Grant Nicholas, the lead singer, muttering about something. This is supposedly the intro for the next track…

11. Into The Blue
The beginning with the bass drum and floor tom take turns over each other is exciting. The melody overall is engaging but I can’t fathom the fact that they didn’t rock it to the max, considering this is one the more upbeat songs. They should add in more distorted guitar parts and rough crash cymbal hits, otherwise, which is what happens, it sounds like Feeder doing a comeback concert in 30 years time (8/10).

12. Guided By A Voice -
It’s the 2008 version of ‘Seven Days in the Sun’, a song with choruses that have a beach/surf vibe and verses that sound as if you’re playing hide and seek. It’s a little bit generic though I must say (7/10).

13. Sonorous
The electric guitar parts sound like a cross between Muse’s 'Hysteria' and Radiohead’s 'Just'. The unmemorable and rather too-calm verses are a let down however (7/10).

Average score = 8.0/10 (**** 4 Stars)
