The Cardigans: VH-1 Says, “One-Hit Wonder”. What the?
May 25th 2008 12:45
VH-1's 100 Greatest "One-Hit" Wonders has put the Cardigans’ 1996 Romeo and Juliet soundtrack "Lovefool" at number 45, approximately 20 notches above “Mambo No. 5”, and 43 above “Barbie Girl”.
What kind of poo is this? Despite actually having had a lot of charting singles around the world for years and producing album after album, this Swedish band has to be closely associated with the likes of Lou Bega and Aqua who didn't last long at all?
VH-1’s explanation, as stated in The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders (Billboard Books, 1998) by Wayne Jancik, was that the list simply contains bands or solo artists that won a position on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream charts JUST ONCE in their whole singing career. In simpler words, someone's musical success once again was measured by American standards. If this is the case, then "One-Hit Wonders" shouldn't be the title.
As food for thought, Macarena deservingly took the #1 spot.
In case you actually agree with the band charting on that U.S.-biased list, below are videos of their other knockout songs that might help prove you wrong. If only America gives artists that don’t come from under their nose a chance.
