The Cardigans: VH-1 Says, “One-Hit Wonder”. What the?
May 25th 2008 12:45
VH-1 100 Greatest "One-Hit" Wonders has put the Cardigans’ 1996 Romeo and Juliet soundtrack "Lovefool" at number 45, approximately 20 notches above the uber-crap tune “Mambo No. 5”, and 43 above the worst rave anthem for toddlers “Barbie Girl”.
What kind of poo is this? This Swedish band is more of a one-hit wonder than the likes of Lou Bega and Aqua despite actually having had a lot of charting singles around the world?
VH-1’s explanation, as stated in The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders (Billboard Books, 1998) by Wayne Jancik, was the list contains bands or solo artists that won a position on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream charts JUST ONCE.
Putting the U.S.-centred bias aside here, for a minute I thought appearing on that list may be a compliment after all. As I was getting closer to the top spot, I expected to see some of the most talented legends or singers with a superb voice who have inspired people everywhere with different powerful emotions. But that thought ended as soon as I saw Macarena taking the #1 spot.
In case you actually agree with the band charting on the list, below are videos of their other knockout songs that might help prove you wrong. If only America gives artists that don’t come from under their nose a chance.
